I am delighted to show you some of the artwork from my great friend Justine Smith and some of the works from her forthcoming show with Waterhouse & Dodd in London.
Am very proud to say that Justine and I go back a long way. We shared studio buildings from 1996 until about 2000 when I left to open my gallery. As you can imagine we have been through alot together and of course I am always interested to see the changes and directions in her work. I mega-applaud Justine. She has the unique ability to work unassisted for months and months in her studio, working through an idea - to emerge at the end of it with a gob-smacking piece of work equally as beautiful as it is charged with political message - an unusual mixture.
All my girls (as I call them.) I adore and admire. They include, Katie Turner, Jo de Pear, Melanie Bowles, Emma Vere Hodge, Sophie Goldstraw and Julianne Lavery. Will be bringing news of each of them as we go but for now Congratulations Justine, we are all very proud.
Justine Smith, London-Gallery Exhibition
From 26 October to 18 November 2011
The Way of the Gun
Waterhouse
& Dodd are proud to present a solo exhibition of Justine Smith’s
beautiful, but politically charged and often controversial works.
With Justine’s recent work making substantial use of real currency in
order to highlight the power and corruption associated with money and
its misuse, particularly on a political level, Jamie Anderson sees the
timing of this exhibition as particularly opportune. “So much of
Justine’s work is concerned with the exposure of dictatorial regimes and
their misuse of power. With the recent Arab uprisings, works such as
her beautiful orchid made from real Libyan Dinar take on an extra level
of meaning.”
The
works in the exhibition at 26 Cork Street, London and will feature a
range of media including sculpture, collage and print work. For further information contact the gallery on +44 20 7734 7800.
